Dwarf hosts
ELVES-Dwarf
ELVES-Dwarf extends the ELVES survey family into the dwarf-host regime, providing a systematic view of satellite populations around dwarf host galaxies in the nearby Universe.
Science case
Overview
Question
Do dwarf galaxies, 10 to 1000 times smaller than the Milky Way, have satellite systems of their own?
Results
The ELVES-Dwarf survey addresses this question by constructing the first large, homogeneous, distance-confirmed sample of satellites around dwarf hosts. The survey targets 39 primarily isolated dwarf galaxies in the Local Volume, spanning host stellar masses of .
We search the hosts out to its projected virial radius using 155 square degrees of Legacy Surveys imaging, and measure their distances using surface brightness fluctuation (SBF). We have identified 39 confirmed satellites, and the survey is typically complete down to .
The satellite populations show substantial diversity from host to host. The satellite abundance, stellar-mass functions, and radial distribution are broadly consistent with theoretical predictions. However, ELVES-Dwarf satellites have a substantially lower quenched fraction than satellites around Milky Way-mass hosts, suggesting that the weaker environments of dwarf galaxies are less efficient at shutting down star formation in their satellites.
